Kenna Burima

Kenna is excited to return to Equinox Vigil again as music and the Union Choir director. She has earned a reputation as someone who can turn ideas into big projects and inspire people to come together, but at her core, Kenna wears one label most proudly: musician. A classically trained pianist with a flair for jazz, pop, rock, and every genre in between, Kenna feels equally comfortable on the stages of Calgary’s grand recital halls as its dark dive bars. She is currently inspired by the music of the turn of the 20th century as well as its end; mining the ragtime styles of Scott Joplin, Tom Turpin and James Scott as much as the power ballads of Alice Cooper and Bon Jovi.

Her current solo work features swirling synths, random beats and cascading piano fills. Her second solo album Hymn is out now and features cabaret-style pop songs (that draw on her training and love of everything from Beethoven to Black Sabbath) that mine musical, political, and emotional ground. What’s born is a brave report of her findings with raw honesty and musical vulnerability.
