Press Release: 2018 Equinox Vigil

For Immediate Release: September 11, 2018

Equinox Vigil uses visual art, music and poetry to remember the dead

Calgary, AB -  The Autumnal Equinox is traditionally a time for reflection, introspection and change, marking the end of summer and the beginning of fall.  It is also a time for acknowledging and honouring nature’s eternal cycle of light and dark, life and death.

Now in its 7 th year, Equinox Vigil has established itself as a welcoming opportunity for Calgary families to come together to pay respect to their deceased loved ones in creative and meaningful ways. The venerable and historic Union Cemetery is transformed into a place of fresh flowers, glowing lantern, processions, beautiful music, colourful shrines and installations & performances by renowned local artists.

Audience members are encouraged to create meaningful personal mementoes, and to display messages to their loved ones on the Digital Shrine. This year Equinox Vigil is also inviting Calgarians to express how they are feeling about the ecological and political changes we are seeing in our world.

“I believe we need ways to show our love and concern for our planet. This year at Equinox Vigil, we are offering small artful, creative, collaborative ways to express our grief and perhaps mourn the changes around the world. People may be experiencing ecological grief, so coming together at Equinox Vigil can be a way to support each other in a public place” said Equinox Vigil organizer and award-winning “artivist” Sharon Stevens.

Participating in this year’s vigil are installation artists Caitlind r.c Brown & Wayne Garret Louise Pagé, Lisa Hodgkinson, Doug Haslam, Nikki Reimer, Eveline Kolijn, Whole in One Collective and Michelena Bamford; performers Kris Demeanor, Cheryl Foggo, Harry Sanders, Kyrsten Blair and Leslie Greentree; musicians Kenna Burima, Jiajia Li, and Laura Reid; as well as the Union Choir,  Bridge to Peace Threshold Choir, and Calgary Renaissance Singers and Players.

Equinox Vigil is a free, family-friendly, non-denominational event.
